Heel Spurs

Heel Spurs

Heel spur, which is also known as a calcaneal spur, is a bony growth caused by calcium deposits which form on the underside of the calcaneus or heel bone.

Symptoms of Heel Spurs

Pain. Heel spurs are not always painful but can cause some pain on the bottom of the feet especially after prolonged resting or during walking

Causes of Heel Spurs

  • Repetitive stress on the plantar fascia can cause plantar fasciitis which commonly cause the formation of heel spurs.
  • Poorly fitted shoes or wearing shoes that don’t provide proper support.
  • Arthritis
  • Obesity or excessive weight
  • Flat feet or high arches

Physiotherapy Treatment for Heel Spurs

The treatment protocol for heel spur is geared towards reducing pain and improving mobility and overall mechanics of the feet. Modalities like therapeutic ultrasound and Shockwave therapy may be used to increase blood flow and accelerate healing in the affected area.

Mobilization and Stretching techniques are administered to help improve the flexibility of the foot. Additionally, strengthening exercises specifically targeting the calf muscles as well as the use of orthotic inserts are generally very helpful to reduce the strain on plantar fascia.
