Olecranin Bursitis

Olecranon bursitis is a condition which is characterized by inflammation of the olecranon bursa.  The olecranon bursa is a fluid-filled sac that provides cushion to your elbow and is located between the skin and the bony prominence at the tip of the elbow known as the olecranon.

Common causes of olecranon bursitis:

  • Trauma
  • Infection
  • Medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout.
  • Repetitive motion
  • Prolong pressure to the elbow

Symptoms of olecranon bursitis:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Limited range of motion
  • Stiffness

Physiotherapy Treatment for Olecranon Bursitis

  • RICE Protocol  (rest, ice, compression and elevation)  especially during the early stages
  • Therapeutic Ultrasound
  • Electromodalities such as Laser or electrical stimulation
  • Manual therapy  such as joint mobilization and soft tissue mobilization
