Accelerate Healing with Shockwave Therapy
A shockwave is intense, but very short energy wave travelling faster than the speed of sound. The basic technology involved with
extracorporeal shockwave technology has been used for decades on millions of people. Therapy sessions are short, usually 20 – 30
minutes in length, and provide successful relief of chronic pain and restores mobility painlessly. Permanent relief typically begins about 72 hours following treatment.
There are no side effects of this non-surgical treatment. Shockwave treatments are non-invasive and promote accelerated recovery of injured soft tissue, bone, heel and joint pain.

What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy was originally invented, and still used, for the treatment of kidney stones (to blast the rigid tissue into smaller pieces, making it easier to pass). After the effectiveness of that treatment was established, researchers began studying the effects of the machine at different settings and used it to treat calcific tissue and scar tissue in the body. Their findings indicate that this treatment is extremely effective for the treatment of most musculoskeletal conditions in the body.
How long is a typical Shockwave Therapy treatment, and how many sessions will I need?
The actual delivery of the Shockwave treatment is very quick. You will receive anywhere between 2000-4000 bursts in a typical session, depending on the condition and area of injury. This delivery would generally take anywhere between 5-10 minutes total. However, your practitioner will most likely want to use a few other treatment techniques after the Shockwave in order to make the treatment session even more effective.
Does it hurt?
The energy bursts delivered through the Shockwave machine are generally uncomfortable, but manageable. While this might seem intimidating, the benefits of the treatment significantly outweigh the temporary discomfort associated with the treatment. The Shockwave machine causes some local inflammation, however this will generate more blood flow to the region and help with the healing process.
Why receive Shockwave Therapy Treatment at Triangle Physiotherapy?
All of our clinicians are trained and experienced in using the Shockwave Therapy machine. Since we began using the Shockwave Therapy machine at Triangle Physiotherapy, our clinicians have successfully treated hundreds of patients that have walked through our doors.
We also approached our purchase of a Shockwave Therapy machine in the same way we approach hiring our staff: quality first! That is why our Shockwave machines are manufactured by Stroz, a Swiss company that upholds the traditional perfection of Swiss craftsmanship. Stroz’s Shockwave machine is the one used in the majority of research studies investigating the effectiveness of Shockwave Therapy treatment and is also used in most hospitals and academic institutions.
Will my treatment be covered under my Extended Health Plan (EHP)?
Yes, it is covered under Physiotherapy or Chiropractic treatment (depending on which provider you’re receiving treatment from).
